LuxWall expands Detroit plant with DOE funding for energy-efficient windows

LuxWall has received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to scale up production in Detroit. The investment will finance a new 276,000-square-foot plant specializing in vacuum insulating glass (VIG), a product engineered to replicate wall-level insulation in windows. This move advances the company’s goal of enhancing building energy efficiency across residential and commercial sectors.

The manufacturing site, scheduled to launch serial production in Q3 2027, will create up to 277 jobs at full operation. This expansion builds on LuxWall’s earlier commitments in Michigan, including its R&D Center in Ypsilanti and Factory One in Litchfield. The DOE’s backing comes through its Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation’s Manufacturing Deployment Office (MDO), which prioritizes domestic energy technology development.

The new facility will prioritize LuxWall’s Transparent Insulation VIG line, a proprietary design that the company claims cuts energy costs for property owners while reducing overall grid strain. The technology targets a persistent inefficiency: buildings frequently pair highly insulated walls with poorly performing windows, resulting in unnecessary energy loss. By addressing this mismatch, the product aims to deliver measurable savings without requiring structural retrofits.
